What Ingredients Do I Need To Make A Toasted Pecan Old Fashioned?

The Alcohol

The Whiskey: An Old Fashioned is mostly whiskey, so it is important that you choose a quality bourbon. Luckily, Florida distilleries are making some fantastic Bourbons for you to choose from. Our go to Florida whiskey for an Old Fashioned is Florida Double Cask Bourbon from St. Augustine Distillery. Other great alternatives are Palm Ridge Reserve from Palm Ridge Distillery and Florida Reserve Bourbon from Timber Creek Distillery.

The Mixers

The Sweetener: Our delicious Toasted Pecan Simple Syrup gives this Old Fashioned delicious notes of nut and bring the taste of pecan pie right to your glass. This simple syrup recipe just involves toasting pecans and simmering them with sugar and water. It’s as easy as that. As well as using it in your fall and thanksgiving co*cktail recipes you can also use it to make a Toasted Pecan Latte or even drizzle it over your pancakes.

The Bitters: A traditional Old Fashioned recipe calls for Angostura Bitters, but for this nutty twist we use Black Walnut Bitters. This adds depth by doubling down on the nut flavor, and really adds another dimension to any bourbon co*cktail. Our favorite is from Fee Brothers who produce a fantastic range of flavored co*cktail bitters.

Recommended Bitters: Fee Brothers Black Walnut Bitters – 5 oz

The Garnish

The Graham Cracker Rim: If you want to go the extra mile then a Graham cracker rim will really impress your friends and family. It also makes this drink taste even more like a pecan pie with the coated rim acting as the pie crust. You can use Honey Maid, but we find that Amazon’s Happy Belly taste just as good.

To coat the rim of your glass first place the Graham crackers in a freezer bag and crush with the bottom of your co*cktail shaker until it looks like breadcrumbs. Then spread onto a small plate. Rub the rim of the glass with a little liquid, we use a little of the simple syrup as it seems to stick better than water. Finally, dip the rim of the glass in the Graham Cracker breadcrumbs until it is well coated.

The Cherry On Top: Whenever we make boozy whiskey co*cktails like an Old Fashioned or a Manhattan we always garnish with a Luxardo maraschino cherry because they are absolutely delicious. For this co*cktail we put a pecan and a cheery on a co*cktail stick and place in the glass to finish.

Recommended Cherry:LUXARDO Maraschino Cherries, 14.1 oz

What Equipment Should I Use To Make A Toasted Pecan Old Fashioned?

The Glass: Use the co*cktails namesake glass and opt for an Old Fashioned glass (also called rocks glass). If you’re new to the world of co*cktail glassware, we’d recommend buying the Double Old Fashioned glasses (also called Double Rocks glasses). These are slightly larger than a single Old Fashioned glass, holding between 10-12 oz. This makes them more versatile as they allow more space for large ice cubes and work great for all kinds of co*cktails.

Recommended Glass: MARQUIS By Waterford Double Old Fashioned Glasses, Set of 4

The Ice: The Toasted Pecan Old Fashioned is made to sip, so it’s best to use large ice cubes. The larger the cube you use the less quickly it will dilute the drink, so you can enjoy it for longer. You can find some great (and affordable) jumbo ice cube molds on Amazon, just be sure to check the width of your glasses to ensure they will fit. The 2 inch molds should fit most glasses.

Recommended Ice Cube Mold: co*ckTAILOR Large Ice Mold, 6 Slot

Shaken or Stirred: An Old Fashioned should always be stirred. If you are just making one drink then you can stir straight in the glass that you are drinking out of. If you are making more than one, or If you enjoy spirit forward co*cktails like an Old Fashioned, Manhattan, then get yourself a mixing glass. It’s one of our most used pieces of bar equipment.

Recommended Mixing Glass: HIWARE Thick Bottom Crystal Mixing Glass, 24 oz
