About This Simulation

Help the laboratory investigate some of their samples of lily anthers and explore the phases of meiosis in them. Learn the basics of meiosis and mitosis by comparing the two processes.

Learning Objectives

  • Outline how traits are inherited
  • Use the microscope to observe the phases of meiosis and understand their main characteristics
  • Compare phases and outcomes of mitosis and meiosis

Learn More About This Simulation

This short, targeted simulation is adapted from the full-length “Meiosis: Understand how traits are inherited” simulation.

In this simulation, you will use microscopy to study samples of lily anthers while helping the team at the laboratory. You will study the process of cell division and discover the key differences between meiosis and mitosis.

Help Monique and her team

You will meet Monique at the laboratory where she and her team is doing a study on lily anthers to investigate the phases of meiosis, and they need your help with an experiment.

Use microscopy to study meiosis

Jumping straight into their research project, you will prepare a sample of a lily anther for microscopy and study the phases of meiosis. You will learn how gametes are formed and how they fuse in fertilization.

Complete the interactive diagram

Then you will compare meiosis and mitosis and learn how each of these processes contributes to human reproduction. You will complete interactive diagrams of both meiosis and mitosis to create a visual overview for yourself. Will you be able to give Marie and her team the help they need?

The tasks you will encounter in this short simulation are parts from the longerMeiosis: Understand how traits are inheritedsimulation, in which you will find other related tasks and missions within this topic.

Meiosis, Mitosis and Plant Gametes | Try Virtual Lab (14)

Margaret Brady

Associate Professor
North Dakota State College of Science

“They did the simulation at home, then completed the in-person lab within 30 minutes, no questions asked, and passed the quiz with flying colors.”

Meiosis, Mitosis and Plant Gametes | Try Virtual Lab (15)

Lewis Mattin

PhD
Lecturer in Human Physiology
University of Westminster

"I saw some of the students who clearly didn’t necessarily like sitting there reading a book discover they could turn on Labster and keep up with the rest of the class because it spoke to them.

Meiosis, Mitosis and Plant Gametes | Try Virtual Lab (16)

Melody McGill

Curriculum Coordinator
Modesto City Schools

"Having something that's engaging for the students gives teachers that opportunity to breathe and get excited again. Because they're seeing the kids light up, they're seeing the kids engage with content."

Meiosis, Mitosis and Plant Gametes | Try Virtual Lab (17)

Kyle Hammon

Adjunct Instructor
Wenatchee Valley College

"The question always is, ‘Can we demonstrate that the students are meeting course outcomes?’ Check! We can do that.”

Meiosis, Mitosis and Plant Gametes | Try Virtual Lab (18)

Dr. Melody Esfandiari

Chemistry Lecturer
San José State University

"We surveyed over 400 students. More than 90% thought Labster was easy to navigate, and that it was fun, but more importantly, most of them felt confident that they could execute the labs in person. And that confidence is a big deal."

Meiosis, Mitosis and Plant Gametes | Try Virtual Lab (19)

Dr. Stuart Goodall

Lecturer
Northumbria University

“The Labster simulations get students to do things, and they're not just sitting there consuming a webinar where their mind can drift. They become an active participant in that learning experience.”
