Barndominiums, affectionately called “barndos,” are some of the most popular home designs in today’s market. Defined by their remarkable flexibility, affordability, and warmth, these contemporary dwellings combine barn-style living with modern adaptability to achieve the ideal building solution for budget-conscious buyers. While some clients envision barndominiums as converted barns and others as prefabricated metal buildings, we define our barndominiums as wood-framed structures with endless customization options. Whatever your definition of a barndo may be, one thing is clear: barndominiums like those we design offer something for every modern home buyer and provide the perfect blank canvas for your one-of-a-kind abode.

Prefabrication Vs. Conventional Construction

Our industry is constantly evolving to accommodate the needs of home buyers, developers, and builders, and one of the most notable ways it’s doing so is by leaning into the advantages of prefabrication. Instead of having your materials delivered, cut, and prepared on-site, prefabrication sees that your framing lumber arrives ready for construction on the job site, with all parts pre-cut, drilled, and labeled to precision and packaged for safe delivery in an off-site manufacturing facility. With a prefabricated building, customers can look forward to numerous benefits for their build, from significantly reduced timelines and cost savings to minimal waste, pollution, and noise on the job site. Considering prefabricated buildings take 30% to 50% fewer framing hours than conventional structures, it’s no wonder prefabrication is rapidly growing in popularity as a construction method and is being continually discussed as a trend to watch for the future.

How We Construct Our Barndominiums

Our Meridian Barndominium Kit combines traditional stick framing methods, clear-span construction, and fiber cement supplements to create an affordable yet substantial frame that requires minimal maintenance over time. Instead of relying on steel columns or pressure-treated lumber, like pole barns do, our Meridian Barndominium Kit utilizes premium, kiln-dried wood posts built on sturdy concrete footers to support the upper floors and roof system.

This method makes for a much stronger, longer-lasting structure, considering our posts are far less susceptible to rot, moisture damage, and cracking than those embedded directly in the ground. Additionally, our pre-manufactured vaulted wood trusses allow us to create wide-open interiors with no interior load points, so you can do anything you wish with your design and configuration.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What's the difference between a barn home or barn with living quarters and a barndominium?

While we see no difference usage-wise between a barndominium and something like our standard barn home or barn with living quarters designs, the term barndominium carries more ambiguity because of its relative newness to our industry. Even so, barn homes, barns with living quarters, and barndominiums can serve the same function as traditional or multi-use homes and utilize wood as their primary building material.

How much does it cost to build a barndominium kit?

The starting price for our Meridian generally falls between $90,000 and $150,000 for the base design and materials package, though costs may fluctuate based on changing market rates. While factors like finishes, customizations, cost of construction, and location will impact the final cost, we often tell clients that their turnkey price will typically fall closer to 3–5 times the price of their chosen standard model.

Does DC Structures offer financing?

Our company does not offer financing. However, our project coordinators are experienced with the financing process for our prefab structures and can help you secure the right financial partner for your project.

Do you offer a warranty on your barndominium designs?

Yes! The materials included in our barndominium building kits are backed by a 10-year limited warranty that starts from and after the date of the owner’s complete payment.

Do you design metal-built barndominiums?

We do not design metal-built barndominiums. We instead craft our barndominium, barn home, and barn with living quarters projects with high-quality wood materials, like select-grade Douglas fir. We believe this makes for a longer-lasting, more beautiful, and overall better structure than anymetal buildingor pole barn on the market.

Do you utilize SIPs?

While we do not use structural insulatedpanels(or SIPs) for our barndominium designs, our clients can add these panels as an extra layer of insulation to their structures.

Can you help me find a contractor?

Yes! We offer a builder network comprised of hundreds of contractors nationwide that can build your project on your property. Whether you’re in California, Texas, or New York, we can help you find builders to bid on your project. Located in the western US? Our parent company, DC Builders, has experienced framing and siding crews that can install and build the shell of your structure.

Where can I build a barndominium?

While dependent on the construction type and plans for the structure, people can build barndominiums almost anywhere. However, the final stamp of approval ultimately must come from the county they plan to build in. With this in mind, it’s important to have a conversation with your county permitting officials ahead of time to determine the requirements associated with your land purchase and building plans. This information will be vital to your project, considering you can then proceed knowing where to allocate your money and the types of structures available to you.
